Impact Statement By joining our Youth in Food Systems team, you can learn about and explore food systems while gaining skills, communicating your learnings with peers, and building capabilities for future career (agri-food and others!) and personal aspirations.
The Market is a series of youth-led, pay-what-you-choose produce stalls running each summer in Waterloo Region. In 2025, markets will operate weekly for seven weeks in Kitchener’s Eastwood and Victoria Hills neighbourhoods, plus a new location in Cambridge’s Blair area.

Description The Youth Food Market is back, and we're looking for youth (14-19) to join as Market and Garden Leaders!
Market Leaders co-design and run the markets, gaining experience in food systems, business, and leadership while engaging with the community. We prioritize youth from these areas but welcome all to apply!
Garden Leaders grow produce in six gardens across the region, supplying 20% of market produce, with the rest from local farms. This role runs in July & August, with two training sessions beforehand. Leaders spend a few hours per week tending to school and community gardens, ensuring fresh produce reaches the markets.

Training / Work Condtions
Training Details: For Market Leaders this will include... Monthly Field Trips from April to June. Mandatory Preseason Training Workshop on May 3rd Bi-weekly virtual team meetings on weekday evenings in May and June.
For Garden Leaders this will include... Monthly Field Trips from April to June. Mandatory Preseason Training Workshop on May 3rd Working Conditions: Primarily in person alongside peers, staff, and adult mentors at various community sites in Kitchener and Cambridge. Accessibility: Support volunteers with special needs, Accessible work space Transportation: On a bus route

Time Commitment
Duration: 7 - 12 months Weekday - Evening, Weekend - Daytime For Market Leaders this will include... Monthly Field Trips from April to June (Saturdays) Mandatory Preseason Training Workshop on May 3rd Bi-weekly virtual team meetings on weekday evenings in May and June. Weekly in-person markets (1-2 hours per market) for 7 weeks through July and August
For Garden Leaders this will include... Monthly Field Trips from April to June (Saturdays) Mandatory Preseason Training Workshop on May 3rd Weekly garden time (2-5 hours per week) throughout the months of July and August
YFS doesn't expect you to be able to attend all activities throughout the season but you will be expected to attend most events.
