Impact Statement United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) is a national charitable literacy organization. We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential.

Description Volunteer tutors assist newcomer children and youth through engaging literacy and numeracy games/activities and homework help. The tutors will support learners from grades 1-10 in developing their writing, reading, and math skills. The tutors will utilize a student-centered, strengths-based approach to support learners in small groups. This program is run in-person at the YMCA Immigrant Services office at 800 King Street West, Kitchener. Our winter 2025 program session will run between 6:00pm-7:45pm from Feb. 5 until Apr. 2 (7 weeks, no program Feb. 19 and Mar. 12).
There is a particular need for volunteers who speak a second language (especially French, Spanish and Arabic).

Training / Work Condtions
Training Details: All United for Literacy volunteer tutors are required to attend:
1) attend a 20-minute mandatory new volunteer interview (over Zoom) either in Dec or Jan (timing flexible)
2) a mandatory new volunteer tutor training session at the University of Waterloo during the week of January 20 (dates TBD). and
3) complete a series of online training module (approx 45 minutes). Working Conditions: Accessibility: Support Newcomers Transportation: On a bus route

Time Commitment
Duration: 3 months or less Weekday - Evening Wednesdays 6:00pm-7:45pm from Feb. 5 until Apr. 2 (7 weeks, no program Feb. 19 and Mar. 12).
